Tour guide scope queried

Two tour guide services could soon be operating in Lawrence, as the town prepares to capitalise on the predicted surge of visitors, pending its 150th anniversary.

But whether the town is big enough to sustain the two ventures is unclear.

The Tuapeka Lawrence Community Company is pushing ahead with plans to have guides dress up in period costume, and provide tours to points of interest in and around the area that sparked the Otago gold rush of 1861.

Meanwhile, Kim Murtagh, who has been operating her own guided tour service for more than four years, plans to continue.

But she doubts there is room in Lawrence for two similar business ventures. She hopes to talk to the community company about working alongside it.

No-one from the community company could be reached for comment.

Potentially, though, two separate guided tour businesses could be operating in the next few months.

The company held a meeting this week to launch its scheme. It plans to use money from the Ministry of Social Development's enterprising communities fund to pay the salary of a manager and setting-up costs. The tours would earn income.

Ms Murtagh, who promotes herself as buxom barmaid Dusty, said her tours offered visitors the chance to see various points of interest, just like the company's proposed service.
