Plans to have Owaka booming for its 150th celebrations in 2016 are taking shape.

Owaka Going Forward chairwoman Aileen Clarke said the group was busy planning for the township's 150th, and had set the dates for the week-long celebrations - beginning on January 4 and finishing on January 10, 2016.

The celebrations would loosely follow the format of the centenary in 1966.

The group is also working towards improving the parking area near the Main Rd playground.

Last December, plans for a large waka sculpture in the centre of Owaka were welcomed by residents.

Designed by Invercargill sculptor Russell Beck, it will be made of stainless steel and be about 10m long and 8m high.

With an estimated cost of about $80,000, the project will be funded through grants and community fundraising. Mrs Clarke said the community had given $3000 already.

It is planned to install the sculpture in the triangle park on the corner of Main Rd and Campbell St, near the Owaka Museum.

Owaka Going Forward was formed as the result of a series of public meetings last year. It is designed to be a representative group for Owaka and to help enhance the township in preparation for the 150th celebrations.

Mrs Clarke said the group asked the Clutha District Council to start a reserve management plan process to protect and guide the development and maintenance of green spaces in the township.

The plan will look at reserve areas at Owaka, including the recreation reserve (sports ground), Main Rd playground and areas around the Owaka Museum, Owaka Memorial Community Centre and Owaka Swimming Pool.

Five submissions made on what should be included in the plan will be discussed by the council's district asset committee on March 27. A reserve management plan will be drafted, followed by another round of public consultation.

Landscape plans and other information are on display at 16 Waikawa Rd, opposite the Owaka Fire Station. Mrs Clarke wants residents to contact committee members to share ideas.
