Upgrade planned for town's 150th

Lawrence marks its 150th anniversary in 2011, and an upgrade of its streetscape is proposed to to help the town look its best for the celebration.

The Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board will receive a report today that includes estimated prices for different parts of the upgrade.

Included on the wish list is an upgrade of the entrance to Gabriels Gully Rd, work on Gabriel's Gully walkway, improvements to the area of Ross Pl at Hospital Creek, enhancements in Ross Pl itself, a new central car park, and the development of a "shared space" in the centre of town.

A report to the board from Clutha District Council area engineer John O'Neill estimates the Gabriel's Gully Rd entrance work could cost $48,000, upgrading the area near Hospital Creek would cost $28,000 and about $29,000 would be required for a new car park.

Two upgrades which are potentially expensive - work on the walkway to Gabriel's Gully and enhancements to Ross Pl - have yet to be priced.

While the community board and Otago Regional Council are working together on the walkway project, the enhancements for the town's main street could be more expensive.

In his report, Mr O'Neill said consideration should be given to placing power lines underground, something which was "likely to be expensive but would significantly enhance the area."

He wants the board to prioritise the projects so "firm decisions" can be made on how to tackle the upgrades.

The board could then start talking to authorities and affected parties, he said.
