Views sought on centre's future

Kaitangata's community will soon be asked for their views on what shape a planned community facility should take as momentum for the proposal gathers.

The town has been talking for some time about what kind of community centre it might like.

Ideas have included having it house a youth centre, heritage display, cafe, meeting rooms, an activity centre and spaces for community groups.

Kaitangata and Districts Promotions is holding a public workshop in early February to develop those ideas.

Community co-ordinator Jean Proctor said previous consultation meetings in 2007 and last year had identified the need for an improved community facility in Kaitangata.

As well as looking at what could be included within the facility, those meetings arrived at a consensus that any new facility should consider the needs of existing clubs and organisations.

"It was also viewed as vital to retain and support already established clubrooms and facilities and working together as a community team to raise the positive profile of Kaitangata."

A group has been investigating the feasibility of redeveloping the Kaitangata War Memorial Hall as a facility to provide for those and other needs.

Civil and structural engineers have conducted a structural assessment of the building and confirmed the next step needed is community assessment.

This means getting the community together to invite feedback.

A public workshop, to be held at the hall on Monday, February 9, from 6pm, will give individuals the chance to express their views, including on who should own such a facility and what it could or should include.

After that, the next step would be to assess all the information gained and plan where to go from there, Mrs Proctor said.

Mrs Proctor said anyone was welcome to attend the meeting.

Those who cannot make it but still have ideas are encouraged to contact her on (03) 413-9769.
