Water plant damaged by vandals

Incidents of vandalism at the Kaitangata water treatment plant have continued, prompting Clutha District Council officials to plead for the community to dob in those responsible.

Offenders, thought to be children or teenagers, have tagged the plant in recent weeks and caused damage to the track and grounds with motorbikes.

Council water services manager Hank Stocker said the latest incident involved vandals cutting through the gate in a fence and throwing planks of wood into the water tanks.

The fence was built only late last year, after previous incidents at the site, he said.

Mr Stocker, in a council statement yesterday, said it amounted to "mindless and costly vandalism".

"Fortunately, the water supply has not yet been contaminated or disrupted but it could easily be, with serious inconvenience and health issues for Kai-tangata and the Wangaloa farming community who rely on this plant for their water supply."

All the relevant costs, including cleaning and repairing of damaged equipment fall directly on to those communities, he said.

The latest vandalism had been reported to police and Mr Stocker urged anyone with information about who was responsible to do the right thing.

The council was now considering installing surveillance cameras at the plant in a bid to stop any further damage.

The attacks had also frustrated the town's promotions group.

Kaitangata and Districts Promotions spokeswoman Joyce Beck said the group was concerned at the damage and costs associated with the vandalism.

She also urged anyone with details of who was involved to contact police or the council"To save costs and eliminate the vandalism, we suggest that we work together as a community to self-regulate the problem and provide a logical and easy solution.

"This solution could happen immediately with virtually no effort and at no cost to the Kaitangata community.

"Surely, it is in the best interests of community development to work together for a proactive outcome to issues in what is essentially our own backyard," she said.
