Irene Mosley leaves the job at the end of this month.
The Clutha District Council's district development board, which pays Mrs Mosley's wages, has agreed to find a temporary replacement for the next calendar year. It wants public feedback on the importance and need for a co-ordinator and hopes to get those responses when it consults on the next long-term council community plan.
District development manager Julie Pearse said the role was important and this had been highlighted by how effective Mrs Mosley had been in the position, which involved networking and helping a cross-section of community groups.
"Both the Clutha District Council and board have acknowledged the enormous contribution the community co-ordinator role has made to the strengthening of the voluntary sector in the Clutha district and to the development of projects that have been key to community cohesiveness and well-being."
She said there had been suggestions the role should be extended and hours increased. There was now a chance for the board to recommend the council expand the job and set up a three-year contract for the next person to take it on.
While the board backed this idea, Mrs Pearse said it agreed this would need to be supported by the public, who would be consulted on this and other proposed changes during the next review of the council's long-term council community plan early next year.
She suggested the role be expanded to 30 hours a week and involve the appointee having direct contact with community organisations, continue working on specialist roles within Big River Promotions, Clutha Recreation Centre Incorporated and the Balclutha Walkways/cycleways Trust as well as having the flexibility to attend to other projects when needed.
