Traffic is closed to one lane during daylight hours where the contractors are working. The work is expected to be completed sometime next week.
Clutha District Council district assets manager Jules Witt said the council had received several service requests regarding rock fall on the road about 3km from Balclutha.
Mr Witt said rocks often became unstable after frosts.
He said the cost of the work was part of the roading maintenance budget and was expected to be $10,000 to $15,000.
