Henry Coates is fascinated by diggers.

And when dad Alister learned demolition of the Government Life building in Invercargill was under way, he decided to take the 4-year-old and his sister Harriet (2) to watch it.

"It is pretty cool. The digger is smashing it down," Henry said.

The inner-city redevelopment will result in the demolition of the entire block bordered by Dee, Tay, Kelvin and Esk Sts, to construct a new centre comprising retail, food and beverage, offices, apartments and more.

An Invercargill Central Ltd spokeswoman said the demolition of the building would take about two weeks to complete.
