A triple hydroslide proposed for Invercargill's Splash Palace won the backing of city councillors at the Community Services Committee meeting yesterday.

Council aquatic services manager Peter Thompson presented the report to the committee, which proposed a $2.89 million stand-alone structure for the facility, featuring three slides.

Online feedback received following an Otago Daily Times article about the project was "phenomenal'', Mr Thompson told councillors.

"When I checked this morning there were about 280 comments, hugely positive,'' he said.

Cr Darren Ludlow, who was not a committee member but present at the meeting, said he commended the endorsement of the recommendation.

"It has the potential, I think, to become one of those attractions that draws people in,'' he said.

Cr Toni Biddle said she agreed with Cr Ludlow, however, was concerned the report was based on funding grant applications being declined.

"I know people will travel to something like this.

"I'm just concerned that we're not exhausting all our options in relation to funding,'' she said.

Three funding applications had been made. The Community Trust of Southland had declined one, and two were deferred by the Invercargill Licensing Trust, Mr Thompson said.

The report will come before the next full council meeting.
