Ammonia leak at Invercargill meat works

One male patient in his sixties has been transported to Invercargill Hospital with minor injuries and others have been injured following an ammonia leak at an Invercargill meat works.

Firefighters were called to Alliance's Lorneville Plant after an automatic gas alarm was activated about 6.30pm, a Fire Service spokesman said.

Five appliances from Wallacetown, Invercargill and Kingswell stations were in attendance and it was understood more people were injured by the spill.

There were no details of the extent of the spill and the number of victims was unknown, the spokesman said.

A St John spokesman said ambulance staff were still assessing the situation and scant details were available.
