Buskers fill the street loudly

It may be New Zealand's home of country music, but a busking competition in Gore yesterday - in one small corner at least - looked and sounded more like a heavy metal concert.

Long-time Gore performer Grant Dickie, better known as Grand Flash Jones, mingled with ukulele-playing musicians, children with guitars and others dressed and performing in the traditional country way.

But Patsy Rigger and Suzanne Prentice he is not.

This guy has an electric guitar, synthesisers, a massive amp and an even bigger attitude.

When Grand Flash is performing, everyone knows about it. The thing is, you hear him before you see him.

You would almost think some grunty band like Def Leppard or Pearl Jam had invaded Gore's country music haven.

But Grand Flash stops traffic, attracts onlookers and loves every second of it. And the crowd loves him too.

After all the country music strands echoing from the main street, this guy is a different kind of distraction.

Many stand transfixed and all politely applaud when he is done.

Dressed in black jeans, leather jacket, Grand Flash laps up the attention as he revels in the chance to perform music he terms "country rocks".

"The street is the real theatre. The music belongs to the people where it's not judged.

"There should be more music in the streets. Power to the people," he said.

Performing his original material, Grand Flash said he brought energy, passion and his own unique style to performing.

The steady crowds that gathered around him proved that the Gold Guitars was not just a celebration of country music but all music, he said.

Then he returns to his place on the footpath, taps his drum machine, grabs his guitar and is off performing another number. The show must go on.

More than 35 buskers of all ages entered the "Freeze Ya Bits Off" competition, lining the main street of Gore.

The weather was surprisingly pleasant for most of the two-hour event although a cold southerly change later in the afternoon reinforced this is a winter event.

Grand Flash and the others have been judged over the past three days.

The winners of the plugged, unplugged and under 14 sections will be announced at 4.30pm today at the Dusk Busk Off finals.
