For the first time, a Southland team has won the Otago-Southland Secondary Interschool Teams Championship chess competition.

Southland Boys’ High School pupils (from left) Oshadha Perera (16), Dylan Lee (17), Atlas Kerr (16) and Kit Zoreno (15) were happy with their win at the weekend.

They received the engraved cup yesterday and Dylan said it was a good feeling to have achieved what they had.

Having competed in the event since year 9, this was his last year to enter.

The competition was a little harder than previous years, he said.

"So that is quite fulfilling."

Although he had expected his team would do well, he felt the outcome was dependent on the opposition; the event had a record 18 teams.

The Invercargill team, whose members have been playing for five to ten years, will head to the national tournament in October; from Dunedin, Logan Park High School’s team will also attend.

James Hargest College also entered three teams, one of them claiming third position.
