Cyanobacteria warning issued for Waikaia River

Elevated levels of a toxic algae have been found in a Southland river.

Environment Southland has warned that people and their animals, should avoid contact with the Waikaia River, after tests revealed elevated levels of the toxic algae benthic cyanobacteria.

The algae can cause harm if it comes into contact with the skin, or is swallowed.

Environment Southland science, strategy and investigations manager Dr Elaine Moriarty said a visual assessment showed its levels had grown.

‘‘The last few days have been really warm so that probably caused the growth.’’

While all animals were at risk, dogs in particular, should avoid contact with the river, she said.

‘‘It’s very rare for people to come in contact with it, because its easy to see, but dogs can die from it.

‘‘They tend to be attracted to it because of the musty smell.’’

The algae was identifiable as a green, brown slime on rocks, or dark brown, black mats at the water’s edge.

It was natural and multi-bacterial, so was not something which could be controlled.

People who became unwell should visit a doctor immediately.

Animals should be taken to a vet immediately if they consumed algae or contaminated water.
