An Invercargill teenager has been arrested over a series of bomb threats sent to organisations around New Zealand.

Police swooped on an Invercargill address yesterday after receiving information from Auckland-based detectives.

A teenage boy was taken into custody without incident, Southland Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman said.

No "items of concern or explosive materials" were found when the boy's home was searched.

"Initial indications suggest the young person had no capability to follow through on the threats.

"Regardless, threats of this nature are taken extremely seriously, and yesterday’s swift action by police reflects this."

The boy has been charged with two counts of threatening to kill/do grievous bodily harm and would appear in the Invercargill Youth Court today.

Further charges may be considered as the investigation progressed.

Police acted after recent email threats made to institutions in Auckland and then to organisations across the country.

Police said they knew of several threatening emails sent to various locations across Auckland last week.
