Decision reserved in 'Easy Rider' hearing

Judge John Strettell has reserved his decision at the end of a defended hearing involving the owner of the Easy Rider fishing boat.

Gloria Davis, sole director of the company which owned Easy Rider and widow of its skipper, Rewai Karetai, was facing 10 charges laid by Maritime New Zealand.

Five were laid against Davis' company, AZ1 Enterprises, and the same five against her as an individual. She denied the allegations.

The hearing began in the Invercargill District Court last Monday and concluded today.

Eight people drowned when Easy Rider was capsized by a rogue wave in Foveaux Strait on March 15, 2012.

Crewman Dallas Reedy, the only survivor, was rescued after 18 hours in the water clinging to a plastic container.

Easy Rider was delivering six passengers to the Muttonbird Islands - all related to Mr Karetai - before the three crew continuing on a commercial fishing trip.

The hearing centred on Davis' culpability as owner for the safe operation of the vessel, and whether Maritime New Zealand rules applied if Easy Rider was on a pleasure trip carrying non-farepaying passengers.
