Dogs attack man in Winton, one still loose

Police were searching for a Rottweiler which attacked a man in the Southland town of Winton today, but it is understood the dog has now been located and has been taken to the pound.

Southern District Police said the female Rottweiler they were looking for was one of two dogs which attacked the man near Great North Rd.

The Otago Daily Times understands the attack lasted at least five minutes and the victim sustained extensive bite marks to his face.

A police spokesman said members of the public chased away the dogs and one of the animals, a male, had been caught by Southland District Council staff, but the other dog, a female, remained on the loose.

They asked anyone who saw the female Rottweiler to call 111.

Police are still searching the area to locate the loose dog.

The man sustained moderate injuries in the attack and has been transported to Southland Hospital.

Police thanked members of the public who helped the victim before officers arrived.
