Drunk man waves knife at rest-home staff member

A man was heavily intoxicated on the day he threatened a manager with a knife at a retirement village — the same day he was released from prison.

Tongatuki Smith (42) appeared for sentence before Judge John Brandts-Giesen in the Invercargill District Court yesterday on two charges; possessing a knife and threatening behaviour likely to cause violence in Invercargill on March 9.

The summary of facts says Smith was released earlier in the day then went to the Rowena Jackson Retirement Village about 3.10pm and approached a staff member.

"The defendant was heavily intoxicated and abusive towards the staff member, standing at the rear entrance to the village."

She walked away to contact her manager.

When the manager came, Smith left but returned not long after with a large kitchen knife in a sheath.

"Holding the knife in one hand, he approached the manager who called police."

When Smith found out she was calling police, he put the knife down his sweat pants and returned to his address.

Police later found the knife in the sheath in Smith’s garage.

Smith was given a six-week jail sentence by Judge Brandts-Giesen.
