Mark MacDonald, of Maheno, was busking yesterday in the Gold Guitars "Freeze Ya Bits Off" busking" competition in Gore ahead of his appearance tomorrow.
Mark MacDonald, a 15-year-old musician from Maheno, was doing his acoustic best to attract a crowd during the first day of the "Freeze Ya Bits Off" busking contest in Gore yesterday.

Mark has been playing the guitar for four years, and said he particularly enjoyed country music because it was easy to sing and had a good sound.

The Waitaki Boys' High School pupil would not be performing in the busking contest today because his guitar tutor, from Dunedin, was playing at the Gore RSA, and Mark was going to support him.

Mark has entered the intermediate Traditional Gold Guitar tomorrow, and said he would give a rendition of the cowboy classic Don't Fence Me In.

Not busking but being entertained yesterday were Dunedin couple Lyn and Mike Kaye who, two years ago, won the New Zealand Gold Guitar 40+ duet category as "The Loaded Gunz".

The couple are in Gore this week to celebrate country music and have entered several categories, "only for fun".

They started performing together at country clubs and karaoke bars just after they got married nearly 14 years ago.

There was a real camaraderie among the country music crowd in Gore, Mr Kaye said.

"I've always loved music, but as you get older, you come home to country."

Busking event manager Helen van der Linden said while only seven buskers had registered for yesterday's round of the competition, today she was expecting numbers to jump dramatically.
