Great South amends statement of intent after pandemic impact

Great South’s statement of intent has been amended to include short-term goals in response to the impact of Covid-19 on the Southland economy.

The statement, for the 2020-21 financial year, was received at the Invercargill City Council performance, policy and partnership committee meeting in the city on Monday.

In a report, ICC strategy and policy manager Rhiannon Suter says the draft statement was first provided to council in February.

However, the council asked the regional development agency to revise the statement as a result of the pandemic.

Council wanted priority issues such as:

  • Supporting key Invercargill industries facing challenges as a result of Covid-19, policy changes and global commodity fluctuations;
  • Continued focus on housing;
  • A domestic events strategy, and;
  • Support for employment and inner-city business

... addressed in its statement.

"Council will work with Great South to formalise these requirements in a service level agreement or similar document as appropriate," Ms Suter’s report says.

The council had earmarked $1.625million for the coming financial year, for Great South’s core and contract funding.

Council would now work with the organisation to introduce an investment agreement and action plan for the CBD.
