The Invercargill couple said they had an older bus years ago and had always had a caravan, but decided to upgrade in style about a year ago.
Their 12m-long custom-fitted former Japanese tour bus was a true home away from home and attracted a lot of attention, wherever they went, Mr Boniface said.
"Lots of people stop and ask to have a look through it."
Nicknamed "La Hoy Yah", the luxury motor home has ample standing room, can sleep four people and is self-levelling.
It is self-sufficient with its own power system and bathroom facilities.
"We can pull in pretty much anywhere where you can get a reasonable park.
Everything stays on board the bus, including waste and rubbish."
Mr Boniface retired from the New Zealand Police about three years ago and the couple have spent time travelling around the South Island and have been exploring Otago, Southland and Canterbury on shorter trips.
While a new granddaughter is keeping them based in Invercargill, they would "in time" take the motorhome up to the North Island, he said.
Travelling in style comes with its own price tag and Mr Boniface said he would not sell the luxury motor home for much under $450,000.
It was "an expensive little house", but worth every cent, he said.
