More than a year after first striking a deal to build a health centre in Tapanui, the district's health body yesterday said it is close to revealing firm details on the future of West Otago health care.

West Otago Health Ltd chairman Brian Brenssell confirmed the organisation had been in talks with the Otago District Health Board, Clutha-Southland MP and deputy prime minister Bill English and other "key players" as it tries to secure final details for the new facility to be built on the grounds of the former Tapanui Hospital.

Mr Brenssell said final arrangements were being made to confirm important details.

The group would then arrange a date for its annual meeting, which would formally receive and adopt those plans.

A public meeting would be held at the same time, he said.

"As soon as we have the information we need in place, we will be calling a meeting so everyone can find out what we've been up to and where we are going."

Mr Brenssell said the group had been making slow but steady progress over the past year.

In April 2008, it announced the long-awaited new health and aged-care centre would be built on the former hospital grounds.

A rest-home, residential care and general practice services are all expected to be based there but exact details would not be confirmed until the meeting, he said.

The April 2008 deal with the district health board was hailed then as the best news for West Otago health in years.

Once completed, Mr Brenssell said at the time, it would mean a return to a fully fledged primary health-care model for Tapanui for the first time in 15 years.

Exactly how much the new venture will cost and who pays is yet to be finalised.
