Pupils' collaboration strikes the right note

Two Gore Main School pupils heard their poetry put to music during a concert yesterday.

Poems by Gore Main School pupils Poppy Patching and Ella Hurley were selected by musicians from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra who worked with the poets to create a special and unique sound for their school.

The theme the students worked from was the school's motto, "Reach for the stars".

The new composition was presented as an item yesterday at the midday concert for students, parents and interested members of the community.

The concert was a culmination of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra's week-long residency at the school, where six musicians created musical items with a group of selected children.

A Christchurch Symphony Orchestra spokeswoman said all items were creatively based to encourage students to explore and develop their musical interest and skills "in a fun-filled way".

They experimented with drum rhythms, basic dance movements, creating music to a story, and instrumental and vocal ensembles.

The programme included children who could already play an instrument, as well as those who wanted to try.

The six musicians from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will visit other schools in Gore as part of the CSO Solid Energy Outreach and Education Programme.

The residency was piloted last year in Westport and was well received by pupils, teachers and parents.
