The Tokanui Gorge Rd Highway in Southland has reopened after a serious crash between a truck and car but care is needed as the road remains slippery.
Four people were hurt, but the injuries were mostly minor, in the incident near Waimahaka last night. One person was taken to Southland Hospital by ambulance, emergency services said.
Two fire appliances, one from Kingswell and Waimahaka attended, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said.
A spokesperson for Southland District Council, Chris Chliton, said a section of highway between Holz Rd and Gorge Rd was closed for about four hours today, with a detour via Fleming Rd and Seaward Downs Gorge Rd (via Mataura Island).
The road had now reopened, but care was needed.
"There is still quite a bit of oil on the road and a temporary speed restriction of 30kmh is in place. Please take it easy. The surface will be slippery."
