Kaitangata's public toilets have been temporarily closed after repeated vandalism there, including a recent attempt to set them alight.
The Clutha District Council, clearly fed up with the recent spate of attacks on the toilets at Victoria Park, yesterday confirmed they would stay locked until repairs were finished.
District assets manager Jules Witt said vandals had targeted the toilets and other Kaitangata community facilities several times in recent weeks.
The repair bill for fire damage to the toilets, damaged playground equipment and a forced entry into the nearby swimming pool totalled $2000, a cost Mr Witt said was paid by Kaitangata ratepayers.
"The sum of repairs is clearly not sustainable and, at this point in time, we have no other option than to temporarily shut the toilets."
Vandalism would not be tolerated and the council would prosecute anyone found to be involved.
"Anyone who sees this type of anti-social behaviour is urged to contact council, or the police, in order to support the local community and prevent these completely unnecessary costs."
