Wastewater campaign

Fiordland residents opposed to the Southland District Council's controversial proposal to pipe treated wastewater from the Te Anau sewage treatment works and spray it on rural land at Manapouri have ramped up their campaign.

They have formed an incorporated society and say they will appeal to the Environment Court if the proposal gets resource consent from Environment Southland.

Fiordland Sewerage Options vice-chairman Regan Smith said residents who lodged submissions opposing the resource consent formed the nucleus of the society.

Membership was growing steadily as others became aware of the proposal, he said.

''Once we show people the paperwork, they have a greater understanding of what is going on ... They think it is crazy.''

At present, treated wastewater is discharged into the Upukerora River and from there into Lake Te Anau.

The Southland District Council's consent to do that expires next week.

• Fiordland Sewerage Options public meeting, Tuesday, October 7, Te Anau Club, Pop Andrews Dr, Te Anau, 7.30pm.
