The South appears to be experiencing higher levels of flu-like illness than many other parts of the country, but health officials say it is not out of the ordinary.
The first flu surveillance weekly report of 2014 shows the South second only to Hutt Valley for influenza-like illness.
Ministry of Health public health director Dr Darren Hunt said the South and Hutt Valley were experiencing higher levels than other parts of the country, but it represented only a few cases (10 in the South).
Some health boards did not furnish data for the first weekly surveillance check, which covered the period April 28 to May 4.
Dr Hunt said it was not too late to get the flu vaccination.
