The owner of Cork Bar, in Helwick St, Samuel Warnock, has applied to the Queenstown Lakes District Council's licensing committee to sell alcohol from 11am until 4am in indoor areas and 11am until 10pm in outdoor areas.
The current licence allows trading until 2.30am in indoor areas and 10pm in outdoor areas.
Wanaka Alcohol Group member Bronwyn Coers told the Otago Daily Times yesterday her group opposed the move for three main reasons.
There was potential for noise issues from the bar, patrons leaving the bar at 4am would have no community support services in the form of police, ambulance or taxis.
Ms Coers said they would be potentially disruptive to other residents who were asleep, as they returned to their accommodation.
"Are they going back into our neighbourhoods where families are trying to have a quieter time, a restful time, to restart their day?"
She was also concerned if one bar was successful in obtaining a later closing time, other bars would follow.
While there were bars in Queenstown that closed at 4am, Ms Coers believed the 2.30am closing time was a point of difference for Wanaka.
"We actually want to be different to Queenstown.
"We're not wanting that all-night activity environment."
She expected the group to have the opportunity to raise its concerns with the licensing committee at a hearing later in the year.
She also hoped to discuss the matter directly with the bar owner.
A representative from the bar was not available for comment yesterday.
According to his application, Mr Warnock has owned a bar in Ponsonby, Auckland, for 19 years.
Cork Bar opened about a year ago, in a building previously occupied by a photography shop.
