Growing local food networks

The resilience of our food networks is the topic of discussion for Wao’s Green Drinks events at Lake Wānaka Centre next Wednesday.

In a media release, the sustainability-focused Wānaka charitable trust said with more people looking at practical ways to cope with the cost of living while building stronger local connections, local food resilience had emerged as an important conversation.

Wao said the event would explore how "distributed local food network models could play an important role in strengthening resilience across the region".

"The Green Drinks event will explore how distributed local food network models could play an important role in strengthening resilience across the region.

"The evening forms part of Wao’s wider resilience response initiative, a community-led response focused on helping the Upper Clutha navigate growing economic, energy, climate and supply chain pressures through stronger local systems, practical action and community connection," the release said.

Wao’s Food Resilience Programme project lead Babu Blatt said food resilience was not just about growing more food.

"It’s about rebuilding local relationships, skills, knowledge and systems that help communities support one another during times of disruption and uncertainty."

The event would include contributions for hunters, fishers and foragers, highlighting the diverse ways people across the region already participated in local food systems, she said.

It would introduce three emerging community lead initiatives: Kai Connect, Carb Club and Seedling Co-operative.

Whether people grew vegetables, kept chickens, hunted, fished, foraged, preserved food or were simply curious about becoming more food resilient, organisers would welcome everyone.

Tickets for the event are $5 via the Wao website.
