Auditions open on Friday, with the event taking place in September, giving the organisers time to polish any rough diamonds.
Stars In Your Eyes music director and secretary David Baker said he encouraged "absolutely anyone" to try out.
"The passion people put into a performance often counts more than the sheer talent of a solo singer, and you’ll be amazed what we can do with you between now and September to put on a brilliant performance."
Mr Baker has been involved in the show for about 10 years, first as a member of the live band, before performing as Lindsay Buckingham in a group playing Fleetwood Mac.
Mr Baker said growing audience expectation created pressure to ensure each show was better than the last.
"Every year I think how are we going to top that, but every year we do."
Mr Baker said the show was run by an army of volunteers.
"We have 80 to 100 people who put a lot of time into this.
"I’ve been looking at the talent that is already registered for auditions and I’m looking at the band that we’ve managed to put together.
"These are musicians who are giving up paid gigs to take part.
"Nobody’s sung a note yet but it’s looking fantastic."
The event hosts 16 musical acts including, solos, duos and bigger groups.
"If there are people out there who fancy giving it a go and have never sung before in public, we can make that work and coach them.
"If they put their heart and soul into it, the audiences will love it."
Mr Baker said the one of his favourite performances was a group of students who "weren’t great singers".
"One of the early ones was four lads from Mount Aspiring College who were the Backstreet Boys.
"The director coached them and the audience just went absolutely nuts.
"They had the moves and were blowing kisses to girls in the audience, it was fantastic," he said.
Stars In Your Eyes, based on the British talent show, is Wānaka’s longest running live show. The first edition took place in 1991, put on by local farmer Jamie Robertson.
Proceeds of the event support music education in the Upper Clutha region.
