However, for those who have lost someone they love the season can prove to be a difficult, even triggering time of year.
Death Cafe Wanaka, a community space for those that are grieving, has taken this into consideration and is hosting a pre-Christmas remembrance ceremony.
For the last four years, Death Cafe organisers Liz Malusching and Su Hoskin have been hosting a morning tea for anyone who is coping with loss during this time of year.
Ms Malusching described the event as a time for people to discuss those they have lost and "make them visible when they seem invisible".
She said the group, often consisting of 12 to 15 people, eat cake and drink tea as they talk to "sweeten the discussion".
They then light a candle for the person they want to remember.
Ms Malushching, a counsellor, expressed just how difficult it was to celebrate the holiday season when grieving, as it could be "lonely over this time".
The aim of the Death Cafe is to give people a community and help ease the loneliness that is symptomatic to losing a loved one.
"It gives people a sense of family," Ms Malushching said.
The ceremony will be starting at 10am next Thursday at St Columba’s Anglican Church and is open the public.
