The centre's aquatic facility will remain closed until further notice.
Advising of the death in a statement this evening, the Queenstown Lakes District Council said despite medical attention the person was not able to be revived and died at the scene.
Emergency services were in attendance.
The QLDC said the aquatic facility at the recreation centre would remain closed until further notice, and council staff would liaise with local iwi to perform a blessing of the site.
The indoor courts and outdoor turf would remain open as normal.
