Wānaka started the game on the front foot, creating a clear chance in the first minute, but fell behind to a goal at minute four while playing out from the back in what was an open start to the game.
Stanley Blair equalised with a well-taken goal just before the 20-minute mark to make it 1-all, settling the side and shifting momentum.
Wānaka continued to build pressure with Blair, Dillian Kahale and Wynn Skinner providing good movement in behind the Nelson Suburbs backline before the dam burst in the 36th minute with a quality pass from Kahale allowing Skinner to make it 2-1.
At the 45-minute mark, Wānaka repeated the trick, with Kahale again providing for Skinner to score to put the game to bed before halftime.
Skinner was named man of the match for his two goals, while Oliver Horgan earned a special mention for his defensive performance.
Josh Shackleton made his 98th appearance in goal for the club, leading the team from the back with his experience.
There were official debuts for new signings Kwadwo Nketia and Josh Bayly, who both contributed positively to the victory.
