Yesterday was no run-of-the mill walk in the park for a young golden Labrador near Wanaka.

On a camping holiday in Wanaka with her owners from Invercargill for a couple of days, 3-year-old Polly was out enjoying some sun on the Waterfall Creek walking track yesterday morning.

Owner Peter Simpson said she chased a rabbit off a bluff on the track and got stuck on a cliff face.

"She couldn't go up, she couldn't go down. She was stuck," Mr Simpson said.

Not having brought his phone with him, he made the "tough decision" to leave Polly and find someone who had a phone to ring emergency services for help.

Wanaka volunteer firefighters and police soon arrived, and abseiled down the cliff to rescue Polly, all in the space of an hour.

"The response was extremely good," Mr Simpson said.

Polly was not injured and seemed unfazed by the experience, although Mr Simpson said a treat and a good sleep would likely be in order later that afternoon.
