Mount Aspiring College celebrates NCEA successes

NCEA results are out and local Wānaka pupils are basking in glory.

Te Kura o Tititea Mount Aspiring College (MAC) principal Nicola Jacobsen said 2023 senior  pupils achieved excellent NCEA results, far exceeding national pass rates and continuing a trend of strong results in recent years.

The results reflected the college’s strong commitment to academic excellence, including its focus on the core skills of numeracy and literacy, she said.

"We offer our students a range of academic pathways, including enrichment opportunities and learning support, which prepare them for their future tertiary and vocational pathways and help them achieve their personal best.

"It’s important to note that while the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) provides data that compares MAC with schools that the NZQA classifies as having a similar profile to MAC, in reality we have a much more diverse school community with more socio-economic barriers than many of these schools, making our students’ performance even more remarkable.

"The gender-based data we receive to help us identify where gender inequity might be impacting student achievement shows that all our students are performing well, bucking the trend seen elsewhere in New Zealand where there is much greater disparity in performance between boys and girls.’’

Ms Jacobsen said the 2023 senior  pupils also achieved strong NCEA merit and excellence endorsements.

‘‘One of our goals for this year is to focus even more on supporting students to achieve their endorsement goals, unlike recent years where we also needed to make sure our students felt connected and safe to learn during the Covid disruptions.

"I am so proud of our students for their effort and resilience in pursuing their studies, and grateful to our staff whose skill and passion provides our students with such exceptional support," she said.
