The once controversial Wanaka Pool celebrates its first birthday on Sunday afternoon with better results than expected.

So far, there have been 107,000 pool visits, which is over 50% more than the number for the old pool in Plantation Rd.

Wanaka Recreation Centre manager Jason Lawless said yesterday the number was equivalent to 10 visits by every resident in the Wanaka area.

Mr Lawless said the pool had proven to be a welcome addition to community recreation facilities and the participation rate was "terrific".

Three weeks short of its first full financial year, the pool has achieved revenue of $390,000, against a projection of $285,000.

Operating expenses were $1,340,000, against a projection of $1,850,000.

The net operating deficit (made up by ratepayers) was $950,000.

Mr Lawless said it was a council guiding principle to achieve a 70:30 split between rates and revenue.

The site and the cost of the $12.28million pool was a hot topic in Wanaka prior to it being built.
