Cardrona Ski Resort has completed its largest endeavour in more than a decade as it prepares to open a new basin. But skiing it will have to wait.

The resort is preparing to open 150ha of new terrain as part of the long-awaited Soho Basin development, but it will not happen this weekend as planned.

Warmer weather this week and forecast rain has led to the postponement of the opening.

A new opening date will be announced in the coming days.

Tucked away behind the top of McDougall’s Chandola and Captain’s Express, the basin promises to be a new playground for both intermediate and advanced skiers.

Cardrona mountain manager Heath Richmond said the basin had been in the works for about 10 years, with the six-seater chair lift installed over two years.

The work was completed over the last year as the team received consent to get a significant amount of the basin and earthworks done.

"It’s the biggest project that I’ve ever seen at Cardrona in 16 years here," Mr Richmond said. " ... there’s been a ton of work, probably a couple of years’ worth of work packed into one busy summer."

The basin has 380 vertical metres of descent with both groomed runs and off-piste areas.

By expanding its terrain, it was hoped the resort would be less constrained and make Cardrona more inviting to skiers from all over the world, Mr Richmond said.

Treble Cone skifield is due to open tomorrow.
