Rehearsals under way for production

Suffrage leader Kate Sheppard’s story will be told by a community theatre group reflecting the depth of talent within the community.

That Bloody Woman is a play following the story of Kate Sheppard, described by a spokeswoman for the production group, Onstage Wānaka, as anything but traditional historical drama.

"The cast and crew showcase a strong mix of experienced performers and new faces, reflecting the depth of talent within the Upper Clutha community.

"For many involved it’s not just about putting on a show, it’s about being part of something bigger," she said.

Audiences can expect a vibrant and entertaining night at the theatre, with dynamic performances, memorable music and a story that celebrates courage, resilience and the power of collective voices," the spokeswoman said.

Director Lisa Clough said the rehearsals had been full of energy, commitment and plenty of laughs.

"We’ve got an incredible group of people involved.

"There’s a real sense of passion in the room: everyone is working hard, supporting each other and bringing something unique to the show," she said.

Cast member Natasha Kay Senior said community theatre was such a special thing.

"You come together with people you might not otherwise meet, and you create something really powerful.

"It’s inspiring to be part of it," she said.

The production is held at the Lake Wānaka Centre from July 10 to 18, with tickets on sale toward the end of May.

Organisers encourage those looking to buy tickets to get in early due to strong interest.
