A Sunday afternoon wedding in Queensberry Hills, between Wanaka and Cromwell, yesterday had a dramatic turn of events when a scrub fire broke out in the grounds of the property.

Guests watched from the marquee and high ground as Fire and Emergency New Zealand volunteer crews from Tarras, Luggate and Alexandra and two helicopters with monsoon buckets fought the fire which broke out at 1.45pm in Briar Lane off Catalina Way.

Fenz shift manager Brent Dunn said a car was destroyed and  300sq m of vegetation was burnt.

He said initial reports were the fire was started by a car exhaust but that could not be confirmed.

We are the owners of the property and would like to make the point that our guests didnt just stand and watch. There were up to 60 people with buckets hoses spades and sacks who worked tirelessly to prevent the fire spreading as much as possible until the fire brigade arrived. We are so grateful to everyone involved particularly the fire brigade and helicopters. They do a fantastic job.
