Wing commander Carolyn Pezaro was among the hundreds of people gathered at the Wānaka lake front last Saturday to commemorate Anzac day.

Originally from Wellington Mrs Pezaro said this was the first time she had attended an Anzac service in Wānaka.

Mrs Pezaro said the turnout was amazing, with a big crowd lots of little kids maybe a puppy or two.

"I had a few people come up to me that were sons and daughters of veterans.

"There was a couple of Australians that came up and felt really privileged to be here.

"It was a really great crowd, everyone was friendly and warm," she said.

Mrs Pezaro said Anzac services were deeply important to who we are as a country.

"As we get further and further away from World War 1 and World War 2 I think we can easily forget the horrors of the wars.

"That being said there is a lot going on in the world right now that reminds us how easily we can slip into something as devastating as a world war.

Mrs Pezaro said she believed a lot of people were worried about the deteriorating geopolitical situation.

"ANZAC day reminds us of the cost of that war and that we should do anything we can to prevent it from happening," she said.

MetService recorded 3C temperatures at 7am on Saturday for both Wānaka and Lake Hāwea during Anzac services.

Both services had a large number of attendees.
