A vehicle  had to be lifted off the motorcyclist who died in a crash near Cardrona yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Crown Range Rd about 4.45pm.

An Otago Daily Times reporter at the scene said the crash happened on a winding stretch of road near an advisory 65kmh sign.

A motorcycle could be seen lying on the gravel verge, with a white van next to it.

A Carters truck with a deck crane was positioned in the middle of the road next to the motorcycle.

On the south side of the crash scene, police were interviewing a group of motorcyclists and pillion passengers next to five other large motorcycles.

Hundreds of motorcyclists are heading to Invercargill this week for the Burt Munro Challenge.
