While the Whakatipu’s currently bereft of wine and beer festivals, an Arrowtown-based gin festival continues to grow each year.

On this Saturday from 1 till 7pm, again at Butler’s Green, Gin Fest Arrowtown’s being organised for the third year running by You Gather Events’ Laura and Campbell Ross.

A crowd of 1000-plus is expected with ticket sales about 400 up on last year.

‘‘It’s a massive age range, we’ve got 18, basically, through to those in their 70s,’’ Laura says.

Of 11 distilleries, five will be from Central Otago — Arrowtown’s Rifters, Queenstown’s Broken Heart Spirits, Scapegrace, Prophecy Distillation Company and Cardrona Distillery.

Co-founded by celebrated Australian actress Margot Robbie, Papa Salt, from Byron Bay, will also be represented — featuring Aussie botanicals such as hibiscus, citrus peel, wattleseed, ginger and a hint of oyster shell — along with distilleries from Auckland, Christchurch, Kaikoura and Geraldine.

‘‘I think it’s cool seeing how creative people are, and every single drink you try from those distilleries will be different,’’ Laura says.

Queenstown’s Maggie Mobile Bar will cater for those keen on a beer, cider or cocktail.

Festival-goers will also be handed a sustainable aluminium cup and Hundy hangover pills.

There’ll be local food vendors, too, while entertainment will be provided by Brad Staley, LA Social and DJ James.

Laura says as a result of feedback they’re providing more shade this weekend.
