An initiative for donation-based haircuts will give some Wānaka families a helping hand this Christmas.

Wānaka barber Jake Jolly said it was about helping out the community.

"A lot of people struggle around this time of year during the lead-up to Christmas," he said.

Earlier this month, Mr Jolly welcomed people to his at-home barber shop for a haircut and pay what they could afford.

Proceeds from the event had been turned into New World vouchers and given to families in need. After a successful Sunday, Mr Jolly gave 20 haircuts and raised $600 for families in the community.

"I had quite a lot of regular clients coming in and donating to the cause and getting amongst, which was pretty cool to see.

"It’s for a good cause and hopefully helps a couple families out.

"People were coming in and donating $10 or $20 but I’d be just as happy if they came in and gave me $2," he said.

Mr Jolly said it was not all about the money.

"If someone were to come in today and say ‘sorry mate I can’t afford it today’, I would have said ‘sweet as’.

"It doesn’t have to be all about the money, you can get out there in other ways without having to put your wallet forward."

Mr Jolly, who earned his barber certificate in 2016, said this year he had really got back into the job.

He is also involved in the local rugby club behind the scenes.

"A quiet assassin really, I don’t like to be mentioned too much."

Mr Jolly said he was all for giving back.

"Last year, prior to December, I would put away $5 each week that I made from haircuts and put that into vouchers for families in the community.

"I just hope I can help some people out," he said.
