Quentin Smith has won the Wanaka ward by-election, preliminary results show.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council announced the result on Friday afternoon.
Mr Smith received 1371 votes.
Jude Battson came second with 968, Wayne Hudson was third with 577 and Eddie Spearing was fourth with 446 votes.
The voter return was at 41.1% with 3366 votes cast, excluding special votes.
The final result would be available early next week.
Mr Smith is the deputy chairman of the Wanaka Community Board.
A by-election would now be held for his seat on the board, as three seats were set aside for Wanaka ward councillors.
