The search for a Swedish hunter missing in the upper Karangarua Valley, south of Fox Glacier on the West Coast, has been abandoned due to bad weather.

Hans Christian Tommarch (27) went hunting by himself on May 12.

Incident controller Jayne Bretherton, of the Greymouth police, said options for continuing the search today were limited.

Low cloud and rain meant it was not feasible to fly a helicopter into the search area and police staff involved in the search ongoing since Thursday night were returning to Greymouth today to review the file.

Yesterday, police said the search for Mr Tommarch was still proceeding on the basis of a live search rather than a body recovery after they found his tent and sleeping bag.

No senior police staff were available to confirm whether this had changed.
