Taking on the piping duties for the Robbie Burns dinner at the Scottish Hall in Invercargill on Saturday evening was a breeze for local lad Sam Lindsay, 14.

His confident handling of the bagpipes hid any notion it was his debut performance at the annual celebration.

The ILT Invercargill Highland Pipe Band member and James Hargest High School student said he was honoured to have had the chance to play for the event.

"It was really exciting and I loved it because I was chosen out of a lot of people," Sam said.

About 100 guests braved the rainy night to celebrate the Scottish bard’s birthday.

Traditions were maintained with the traditional Selkirk Grace, whisky drinking, address to the haggis and toast to the haggis, king and the man of the hour — Scottish poet and lyricist Robbie Burns.

Invercargill Mayor Tom Campbell was the guest speaker.
