Invercargill North and Sunrise Rotary Clubs will hold their duck derby fundraiser on Otepuni Creek on April 11, starting at 10am.
Invercargill North Rotary Club fundraising director Doug Lindsay said the event, which has been held for four years, was a fun morning out.
‘‘Even if the weather’s not that great, which it was last year, people still seem to enjoy the day.’’
People buy a ticket with a number which corresponds to the number on the duck.
One thousand ducks would be launched from the Conon St bridge in batches of 250.
‘‘Near the Nith St bridge, we set up a capture structure and we have three guys in the stream with fishing nets and they capture the first, second and third duck and hand them to the adjudicator who then records which duck number was first, second and third.’’
Family ducks cost $10 each.
Footpaths along each side of the stream provide safe viewing for family members.
After the family races finished, there would be a race for corporate ducks which cost $150.
A further family race that cost $2 a duck would be held if there was sufficient demand. All races carry cash prizes.
Last year, about 300 people attended the event and $20,000 was distributed to charities involved in youth health and wellbeing support.
- Tickets will be on sale at several venues around the city including Metalon South and 1st National Real Estate.
