Hospital visitors welcome again

Southland Hospital has once again opened its medical and surgical wards to visitors following an outbreak of gastroenteritis last week.

Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand (HNZ) Southern announced yesterday the wards had reopened to the public following closure last Thursday to protect patients and staff.

Gastroenteritis was often highly infectious, HNZ said.

The condition could cause vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and nausea, and people with these symptoms were asked not to visit patients in hospital.
