Sentence deferred over hotel TV theft

Taking complimentary shampoo from a hotel room might be acceptable, but one bold man took a television.

David James Murray, 54, appeared in the Invercargill District Court this week on one charge of theft.

On March 30 the defendant was at the Hilton Resort and Spa in Queenstown.

He and an unknown female were in the loading dock, which was an authorised-access area.

Security cameras captured them putting a $600 television and remote into the back of a car.

Police found Murray and recovered the stolen property shortly after.

No reparation was sought.

The self-represented man told the court he stole the television because he was experiencing a diabetic low.

He said when he was in that state he did "strange things".

The court heard Murray had committed no dishonesty offences for almost 20 years.

Judge Mark Callaghan deferred Murray’s sentence for six months.

"It’s pointless giving you any penalty," he said.

"As long as you don’t go and do something stupid again in the next six months, that’ll be the end of it."
