But yesterday’s Tour of Southland riders got the opportunity to do just that.
Tour promoter Nathan Burdon said it was the first time since 2008 the Kingston Flyer had been incorporated into the schedule.
"Logistically, it's a bit of a nightmare to be honest because we are doing traffic movements at that part of the stage as well.
"Obviously with the tour being rescheduled to January, there's more traffic on the road at this time of the year.
"There's also ensuring that the train can get up to speed at the same time that the riders are coming — trying to guess when the riders are going to be on that particular piece of the road."
Mr Burdon said they were "very lucky" all the pieces came together in that section.
"I think over the next few days when we talk to the riders, they'll realise that they were actually part of something pretty special, bringing that part of the stage back together."
The Tour of Southland began on January 18 in Invercargill and finishes on January 26.
Yesterday’s stage from Mossburn to the Remarkables was won by defending champion Josh Burnett.
Originally scheduled to take place in November last year, the event was postponed due to the horrific weather that month.
Mr Burdon said another tour would take place in November this year.
