Shot put exponent Valerie Adams got her international season off to a good start with a win in Melbourne last night but fellow Kiwi Nick Willis missed out on a podium in the men's 1500m.
Olympic champion Adams showed good early season form with a winning throw of 20.13m.
In the upset of the night, Australia's Jeff Riseley beat reigning Olympic champion Asbel Kiprop, of Kenya, to win the 1500m in 3min 36.71sec.
Kiprop finished in 3min 37.63sec to hold off American Alan Webb and Olympic silver medalist Willis, who clocked 3min 38.76sec.
David Rudisha, the 2010's male athlete of the year, kicked off the World Challenge series with a commanding win in the 800m.
The 22-year-old Kenyan, the world record-holder, won the 800m in 1min 43.88sec, with American Nick Symmonds second.
Kenyan-born American Bernard Lagat won the 5000m in 13min 08.43sec, the 2007 world champion pulling away from Australia's Ben St. Lawrence over the last 200m.
Olympic 100m hurdles silver medalist Sally Pearson, of Australia, won the women's 100-200 double over American Miki Barber.
